Privacy policy

SpoolGuide needs very little from you. This page says what happens to the information that passes through it. If anything here is unclear, write to contact@spoolguide.com.

What you type stays on your device

The numbers you type into a calculator are worked out in your browser. The site never receives them, and there are no accounts. When you close the page, they are gone.

The filament tracker is the one exception. Once you add a spool of your own, your spools and prints are saved in your browser’s storage on this device, so they are there when you come back. They never leave your device and we cannot see them. Back up saves them to a file that only you hold, and Delete all removes them, as does clearing this site’s data in your browser.

Sharing your numbers

The share button of a calculator makes a link to that page with the numbers you typed in it. SpoolGuide sends the link nowhere: you choose who gets it, in your phone’s share sheet or by pasting it yourself. The site never receives the numbers in a link. When someone opens it, the page fills in the boxes and takes the numbers out of the address, so they do not stay there.

Anyone you send the link to can read the numbers in it, so look at them before you share.

What our host sees

The site is served by a hosting company. Like any host, it receives the technical details of each request: your IP address, the page you asked for, your browser and device type, and the time. It uses them to deliver the page and to protect the service from abuse, under its own privacy policy. We see totals about the site as a whole, and nothing that says who you are.

Counting visits

We count visits with Google Analytics, to see which pages people use and which they leave. For each page you open, it records the address and title of the page, the site that sent you, your language, and your browser and device type. Google also receives your IP address and uses it to estimate roughly where you are.

It never records the numbers you type or the spools in your tracker, and the address it gets never holds the numbers of a shared link. Your visits are not used to show you ads. Google keeps the details of each visit for two months, and the totals we read are kept longer. Google’s privacy policy (opens in a new tab) covers what Google does with the data.

Cookies and storage

Google Analytics sets two cookies, _ga and one whose name starts with _ga_, and they last up to two years. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland they are set only if you agree to them. Without your agreement, your browser still tells Google that a page was opened, with no cookie and no identifier kept on your device. Elsewhere they are set once the page has loaded. You can turn Google Analytics off in your browser with Google’s opt-out add-on (opens in a new tab).

Apart from those, the only thing SpoolGuide keeps between visits is your filament tracker, in your browser’s storage on your device, and only after you add a spool of your own.

Children

SpoolGuide is written for adults. It isn’t directed at children under 13 (in some countries the age is higher), and we don’t knowingly collect information from children.

Your rights

Because we keep no account and no profile, there is nothing about you for us to look up, correct or delete. What Google Analytics records is held by Google, under its own policy, and is not tied to your name. Your filament tracker is on your device, where you can change or delete it yourself. Our host holds its own data under its own policy, and you can ask it for access, correction or deletion. If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you can also complain to your data protection authority. If you think we hold something about you, write to contact@spoolguide.com and we will answer within a month. If you write to us, we keep your message and your address only to answer you.
